Typescript reminiscences of Grace Howard Gray concerning her father, General Oliver Otis Howard, commander of the U.S. Army's Department of the Columbia from 1874 to 1880. Howard directed military campaigns against the Nez Percé, Bannock, and Paiute Indians while stationed in the Pacific Northwest. Memoir recorded by Dorothy O. Johansen.

Oliver Howard was born in Leeds, Maine, the son of Rowland Bailey Howard and Eliza Otis Howard. Rowland, a farmer, died when Oliver was 9 years old. Oliver attended Monmouth Academy in Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy in Yarmouth, Kents Hill School in Readfield, and graduated from Bowdoin College in 1850 at the age of 19. Grace Howard Gray (1857-1949), a daughter of General O.O. Howard (1830-1909), was born in Leeds, Maine. In 1875, she left her studies at Vassar College to join her parents at Vancouver, Washington Territory, where her father commanded the U.S. Army's Department of the Columbia.
